今年度は小学校で教科書改訂の年となりましたが、次年度は中学校の教科書改訂の年になります。中でも一番大きな変更を伴う教科は英語となります。ではその内容はどうなっているのでしょうか。

大幅に増えた単語数

現行のNEW HORIZONで扱っている単語数は合計で1,259語です。今回の教科書改訂では、扱われる総単語数は約2,300語に増加し、増加数はおよそ1,000語になります。ここで注意してほしいのはその内訳です。今年度から小学校で英語が教科化されたことに伴って630語は小学校での既習語となり、中学校での新出単語は約1,700語とされています。つまり、約4分の1は小学校で学習したことになっているのです。

増える単語数の実態は？

このように総単語数でも圧倒的な差がついていますが、それ以上に大きな点は、「特に覚えたい語」つまり「書くことができなければならない単語」になります。これは現行版では、1年で407語、2年で146語、3年で46語の合計600語となっていますが、今回の改訂で1,000語となり、400語が増加することになります。まず、その400語という数に驚かされると思いますが、それ以上に驚くことは、「特に覚えたい語」の合計1,000語のうち、小学校の既習語が468語となっています。つまり、中学校での「特に覚えたい語」の約2分の1は小学校での既習語になっているのです。

新中学校1年生の最初の定期テストはどう変わるのか？

「脱ゆとり」となった前々回の学習指導要領の改訂時にもWarm Upという形で、中1の最初で扱う単語数が大幅に増加しましたが、その際はまだ「単語を書かせる問題」は多くありませんでした。それが今回は「特に覚えたい語」とされている以上、来年の中学校1年生の1学期中間テストでは、早速、多くの単語を書くことが求められる問題が出題される可能性もあります。現在小学校6年生の皆さんは、単語を見て、読める、意味が分かるだけでなく、「書くことができる」ようになることを意識して学習に取り組んでいきましょう。
